Poltava is a city located on the Vorskla River in Central Ukraine. The present name is traditionally connected to the settlement Ltava which is mentioned in the Hypatian Chronicle in 1174. Legendary Prince Igor Sviatoslavich, chasing hords of the Cuman khans Konchack and Kobiak, crossed the Vorksla River near Ltava and moved towards Pereyaslav, where Igor’s army was victorious over the Cumans. Poltava sustained a considerable devastation and depopulation during its dramatic history, but finally became one of the major centres of culture, science, education and commerce in modern Ukraine. One of the sightseeing symbols of Poltava is the Monastery of the Exaltation of the Cross, a supeb monument of Ukrainian Baroque style. Its foundation was ordered by Silvester Kossov, the Metripolitan of Kyiv, to commemorate a victory of the Cossacks Host in 1650 over the Polish army. Poltava served as a Cossack stronghold during the Khelnytsky Uprising.
